What Is a SunRain Prism Suncatcher?
A SunRain Prism Suncatcher is a handmade crystal window decoration designed to turn direct sunlight into vivid natural rainbows.
Each one is assembled by hand in Omaha, Nebraska, using 25 genuine Asfour Egyptian lead-crystal chandelier prisms arranged around a cast-resin center.
When direct sunlight passes through the crystal facets, the prisms separate white light into its visible colors and project those colors across walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and other surfaces in the room.
More Than a Single Hanging Prism
Many rainbow makers use one hanging crystal or a small cluster of beads.
SunRain is different.
Instead of relying on one prism, each design uses 25 individual crystal prisms arranged in a radial pattern.
That means sunlight can strike many different facets and angles at once, creating multiple spectra throughout the room rather than a single small rainbow.
The result is part window decoration, part light sculpture, and part optical experiment.
Genuine Asfour Lead Crystal
The crystal is the heart of the design.
SunRain uses genuine Asfour Egyptian lead-crystal chandelier prisms because of their clarity, weight, precise faceting, and ability to separate sunlight into strong visible spectra.
Each prism contains multiple polished surfaces that bend and redirect incoming light.
When several prisms receive direct sunlight at the same time, the room can fill with moving patches of color.
Direct Sunlight Is Essential
SunRain does not create rainbows from ordinary room brightness.
It needs direct sunlight.
When the sun reaches the prisms, the effect can be dramatic. When clouds block the sun or the window is shaded, the rainbows disappear.
That changing quality is part of the experience.
There are no batteries, motors, LEDs, or electronics involved.
The energy source is simply the sun.
Why the Rainbows Move
The rainbows move because the relationship between the sun, the crystal, and the room is constantly changing.
As the sun travels across the sky, the angle of incoming light changes.
That causes the spectra to move across walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and other surfaces.
The display can also change when the suncatcher itself moves slightly.
Every sunny day can look a little different.
The Four Current SunRain Designs
The current SunRain collection includes four principal designs.
6-Inch Prism Suncatcher
The classic SunRain design, compact enough for many windows while still producing a strong rainbow display.
Star Prism Suncatcher
Uses different prism lengths to create a distinctive star-like crystal arrangement.
7-Inch Prism Suncatcher
Made with longer, narrower prisms for a larger, more dramatic sunburst appearance.
Hexagon Prism Suncatcher
A round radial suncatcher made with wider prisms that have a distinctive hexagonal profile and tapered shape.
All four designs use 25 genuine Asfour lead-crystal prisms.
A Handmade Resin Center
The crystal prisms are arranged around a cast-resin center.
Each suncatcher is assembled individually rather than mass-produced.
The resin center helps lock the radial arrangement together while creating the visual center of the piece.
Some designs are available with translucent center colors or personalization options.
Because the pieces are handmade, small variations are part of their character.
Designed to Hang in a Sunny Window
A SunRain hangs from a decorative chain.
The best location is a window where direct sunlight can reach the prisms for part of the day.
East-, south-, and west-facing windows can all work well depending on your home and the season.
The ideal location is not necessarily the brightest room. It is the place where the sun itself actually reaches the crystal.
What Makes the Display So Dramatic?
Three things work together:
Many prisms
Twenty-five separate crystals create many opportunities for sunlight to be refracted.
High-quality faceting
The polished Asfour crystal facets bend and separate light effectively.
Room-scale projection
The resulting spectra can travel well beyond the window and appear on large surfaces throughout the room.
A single small object hanging near the glass can transform the visual atmosphere of an entire sunny space.
Art and Science Together
SunRain began from a fascination with geometry, optics, resin, crystal, and color.
The radial layouts are decorative, but the effect is based on real optical principles.
White sunlight contains many wavelengths of visible light.
When that light enters and exits the crystal at different angles, those wavelengths bend by different amounts.
The prism reveals colors that were already present in the sunlight.
Nothing artificial is added.
Made in Omaha
Each SunRain Prism Suncatcher is handmade one at a time in Omaha, Nebraska.
The process includes arranging and securing the prisms, casting the resin center, cleaning the crystal, attaching the hanging hardware, and inspecting the finished piece.
The goal is to make something that looks beautiful even when the sun is not shining—and becomes remarkable when it is.
A Gift That Changes With the Light
SunRain Prism Suncatchers can work especially well as gifts because they are both decorative and experiential.
They can be given for:
- Housewarmings
- Weddings
- Anniversaries
- Birthdays
- Holidays
- Nurseries
- New homes
- Studios and offices
- Anyone who loves crystal, color, sunlight, science, or unusual handmade art
The recipient does not simply receive an object.
They receive a changing display of natural light.
The Simple Idea Behind SunRain
SunRain is built around one simple idea:
Take real sunlight, pass it through real crystal, and let the room become part of the artwork.
Real Sunlight. Real Rainbows. Transform a Sunny Window.
